All about Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda var. red)

What is there not to like about this super easy, super hardy shrimp? You could leave a few in an aquarium in your back yard for a year and when you returned they’d likely still be thriving (Although we wouldn’t recommend it).

The RCS is a very good beginners shrimp as it is extremely tolerant to poor water quality and higher ammonia levels. However look after them properly and they are delightful invert, with a strong red colouration and the ability to breed like, well, shrimp.

Water Parameters

A pH range from 6.0 to 8.0, soft and hard water, temperatures from 72F to 84F is ideal. As you can see, they really aren’t picky.

Feel free to use anything from sand to gravel or even active substrates like ADA or Oliver Knott for planting. Personally I use OK active soil as it naturally leaches ammonia when first being cycled, building a very strong bacteria bloom which then helps keep organic ammonia at bay, but each to their own.

Feeding

Feeding is best done once a day a algae wafer or two will suffice (enough to last 2-3 hours until fully consumer).

Breeding

They will likely breed in any condition providing there is not a large amount of ammonia present and that there is sufficient food available.
